What do our Graduate Mechanical Engineers do? 

As a Graduate Mechanical Engineer based in Stantec’s Dunedin office, you will have the opportunity to work on a variety of exiting projects in the industrial, energy, water, wastewater, stormwater, and hydro/dams (mechanical) fields. 

You will join a Dunedin and South Island team that works on infrastructure projects, not only locally, but across New Zealand and the wider Asia Pacific region. You will work with a diverse client set that ranges from local government and private developers, and even includes clients in the Pacific and beyond. 

You will be based in an office in a central location with easy walking or cycling access to many of the Dunedin suburbs. You will be living in a vibrant community where the active lifestyle thrives, with easy access for exploring New Zealand’s stunning southern mountains and lakes. With hiking, surfing, a world class stadium, wildlife, boutique breweries / bustling café scene and mountain biking on your doorstep, you won’t have to travel far to have adventures after work! 

The type of projects you will be working on may range from piping stress analysis and construction monitoring on an industrial piping project to works on a 4000L/s critical wastewater pump station, or involvement on local and international hydro/dam projects.  

You will: 

  • work over the entire project lifecycle, from optioneering/concept through to design and onto construction monitoring activities.
  • Gain exposure to project management and client management.
  • Join with a large, nurturing, and diverse team that works on local, national and international infrastructure projects.
  • Collaborate with and learn from national and international industry experts.

What you will bring 

You will be a recent graduate with a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (hon), ready to kick start your professional engineering career! You are motivated, pragmatic, and have an appetite for learning and gaining experience across various disciplines.  

You will have a strong interest in water or building engineering, and as we are to improving the world we live in, seizing the environmental challenges that we all face and coming up with solutions that will benefit generations to come.   

You will demonstrate personal leadership qualities and thrive in an environment in which they are challenged. 

To be eligible to apply, you must: 

  • Be a recent graduate or due to complete your tertiary education in 2025
  • Preferably hold a current restricted or full driving licence
  • Working Rights in New Zealand (Student Visa holder, convertible to post study open work visa, Permanent Resident OR Citizen)
