  • Technology

What it does: A technology company with four global businesses in digital industries: industrial automation (the use of computers or robots to handle different processes and machineries), electrification (the process of powering by electricity), robotics and discrete automation (solutions in robotics, machine, and factory automation), and motion (it is the world's largest supplier of motors and drives).

Best known for: Developing substations (a set of equipment that transforms voltage from high to low, or the reverse) for some of the Middle East’s most iconic establishments: the Palm Island, the Dubai Metro, and the Burj Khalifa. It also assisted in providing power or technology for Dubai Aluminum, Dubai Airport, Abu Dhabi's Yas Marina Hotel, Saudi Arabia's King Saud bin Abdulaziz University and rail network, and Egypt's Hurghada International Airport, among others.

Staff stats: 136,000+ in 100 countries.

The good bits: Above-industry-average basic pay (in most countries), comprehensive benefits, work-life balance, a diverse workforce, job security, global mobility, and a chance to work with cutting-edge technology on massive-scale projects

The not-so-good bits:  Plagued with issues commonly encountered in big companies: slow decision making and a layered management that may leave some employees in the dark about company direction and strategy. Job advancement may be difficult for some roles.

The ABB story

ABB is the product of many mergers and acquisitions, but primarily, the group was founded when two leading organisations in European electrical engineering history merged: ASEA, a Swedish industrial company, and BBC, a global electric engineering group.

Headquartered in Zurich, Switzerland, ABB has been in the energy business for around 120 years, pioneering various innovations that define today's utility and industrial landscape including ABB industrial robots and ABB variable speed drives. Several ABB technologies are used around the world along the entire energy value chain, from resource extraction and its transformation into refined petroleum products, liquefied natural gas, or electricity, to its use in transportation, industry, and buildings.

As one of the world's leading suppliers of modular manufacturing systems, industrial robots, and services, the company offers a variety of solutions to automotive manufacturers, with a strong solution, focus that assists them in improving product quality, worker safety, and productivity. ABB has installed around 190,000 robots around the world. Several products and services are also used in industries related to food, water, metals, pulp and paper, and many more.

The recruitment process

The recruitment process varies from role to role, but graduates may expect to begin with an initial face-to-face or teleconference interview. Graduates may also receive an email invitation with a list of questions, and they may choose to video record their answers and send them over at their most convenient time. Apart from assessing the applicant’s experience, qualifications, and competencies during the initial interview, the HR representative will also check their overall cultural fit within the organisation.

Short-listed applicants will then be invited for a second interview, where both parties may assess their suitability for the role and organization. The company notifies candidates within a reasonable time frame.

During the job offer, the applicant's professional and academic qualifications are verified, compliance and reference checks are made, work permits and right-to-work status are validated while medical clearances/drug test results are obtained.

Customers are always put front and centre and all must work together and trust one another to make the right decisions while taking responsibility for their work.

ABB's corporate social responsibility is expressed through sustainability: balancing environmental stewardship, economic success, and social progress to benefit all stakeholders. This is done through ensuring a responsible business, developing technologies that lessen negative environmental impacts, improving energy efficiency and increasing industrial productivity, and launching local and global programs at a community level (including rural electrification programs and hundreds of social projects).

The vibe of the place

ABB's main draws are plentiful: great pay, numerous benefits, work-life balance, and a chance to travel the world. A stint at this company offers opportunities to work on large-scale projects that have global influence -- a worthy addition to your credentials. But before signing the job offer, consider the drawbacks: insiders mostly complained about minimal job advancement with most expressing their vexation about the company's slow decision-making process.
